Reading/Singing at Good Earth

P1040082P1040099

Saturday October 20, 2018 the Good Earth hosted a children’s story time and gave me an opportunity to read The Happy Pumpkin. We sang and read and had a blast! My book and several of my artwork pumpkin paintings are displayed inside at Good Earth in Little Rock for the month of October, if anyone would like to have a Happy Pumpkin painting by Miss Carol. For anyone living out of state you can get a copy of this  Halloween/Thanksgiving storybook at Amazon. A wonderful fun story about sharing pumpkin seeds giving tribute to the America’s very first farmers.

The Happy Pumpkin has been revised to a big 8 x 11 size book with colorful artwork. Intended for young children and families to read during harvest/fall Halloween to Thanksgiving and as a Thanksgiving Day tradition.

Its a fun-filled poetic read of one pilgrims journey to America, written for children, but with a message for all. Its about the struggles and rewards of harvest time. The Happy Pumpkin grows up and produces lots of seeds to feed the new nation, becomes a Jack-O-Lantern, and helps the pilgrim find a good wife all by Thanksgiving Day.

The author, Carol Dabney, was raised on a 40 acre farm in Madison County Arkansas. She learned the value of a hard working farm where there was crops to harvest and goats to milk. She has five children and six children. She happily works as a music teacher at St. Mark’s Day School in Little Rock.

I brought along a couple of friends my students enjoy at school. Mr. Owl, who sings in a deep voice the song “I’m Not Scared!” but often scares himself, until the children sing softly so he stops hiding his eyes and returns to singing along. Then there is Green Frog, who sing the song “Five Green and Speckled Frogs” I also brought Baby Bumblebee and Dudley the Duck who gives kisses to children and sing the song “Six Little Duck”.

There was a goat dressed as a pumpkin, so naturally I was drawn to the lit’ guy. Rod says says that’s why he and I get along so well.

My artwork is displayed inside the main building at the Good Earth for the month of October, if anyone wants to take home a Miss Carol Happy Pumpkin painting. My storybooks will be there too. The Good Earth on Cantrell Hwy 10 in Little Rock, Arkansas.

74th Arkansas Writer’s Conference

Carol Conference 1

I love going to the Arkansas Writer’s Conference. I meet other authors who share so much information about writing and marketing. Some of us set up tables of our books. Its fun to see the covers and artwork on everyone’s newest offerings. I been to a couple years in a row and its becoming liken unto a family reunion, seeing old friends and catching up. Ideas of what we are each doing to share our stories are fascinating and very helpful. I always learn something fresh and leave with new energy.

This year I was one of the presenters. I shared about my first story “Military Mommy” about my daughter who entered the United States Army. The update was she had been gone to Iraq for the past 10 months and we were awaiting her soon return to America. They were ready to board the plane to come home weeks before but a sudden scary illness had them in quarantine at the time of the conference. I am happy to say even though it was a nasty stomach bug, the soldiers returned safely this week. We had a fun family get together this past weekend and she got to see her children. As a mother, I am relieved and thankful beyond words that she is home. God bless America.

A simple poetic story about military families.  “Military Mommy” about my daughter Melissa Dabney. The little book has photographs of the military base at bootcamp in Jacksonville, South Carolina and her first duty station in the Hawaiian island.

That story led to a biography of my father who was a Navyman during WWII. It was to be a short essay but turned into his whole life’s journey. A military love story  “Dance Me Home” took three years and became a 70,000 word book.  I shared a song I wrote for my dad called “Soldier”

Dance Me Home

Dance Me Home 2012 is a military love story biography written by Carol Dabney

My writing turned a corner after dad’s book and I started writing children’s books. I started working as a music teacher at St. Mark’s Day School in Little Rock. I love children. Raised five of my own. They are grown now and having children of their own.

I wrote a whimsical Christmas story about a mouse. “Twas The Mouse before Christmas” I spent a year learning how to illustrate. That was harder then it sounds.

harold-1-cover

After that, I was asked to illustrate some animals parables for another author. Attorney Everett Martindale. Presently we have 12 storybooks. At the writer’s conference I shared about how my music students help me in the development of songs to go with the stories.  I featured “Wisdom, the Elephant Used by God”

IMG_1188

My sister-in-law Cindy Reyes translates the animal books into Spanish.  I discovered a talented musician in Rod Ragsdale and we found a recording studio and started producing audiobooks of these wonderful stories. Rod is the voice of many of the stories. We add background sounds and have a lot of fun. I recommend Blue Chair Recording Studio in Austin, Arkansas. The engineer Darian Stribling is fabulous.

I think at the end of my writer’s conference I share a song I recorded when I was just 17. I had been awarded a recording contract with Paradise Records in Nashville, Tenn after winning the national talent award as “Miss Arkansas Teen” The song “Arkansas” really describes my young life being raised on a 40 acre farm in the Ozarks. Southern roots.

Now I live and work in Little Rock and its been an amazing journey. Thank you to all at the conference for so much encouragement. I’m also thankful for the support in buying my storybooks online at Amazon and local bookstores and festival.

Oh and I am happy to announce that Rod and I will be married at the end of summer 2018.

Carol and Rod Patriotic

Rod and I will be reading and singing at the Hillary Clinton Children’s Library and Learning Center Saturday July 28th at 10am. Hope to see you there.

…and I’m engaged to the singing Santa, which makes it all the more festive.

It doesn’t matter what age you are, we are all childlike at Christmas.

Rod Ragsdale sang Christmas carols for Holiday House at the Arkansas State convention center  starting in November to kick off the season. Rod, Cindy and my daughter Michelle sang Christmas carols at the Arkansas State Capital December 2 for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting. Rod and I have been to over 30 senior centers and nursing homes in central Arkansas, festivals and several schools.

Plus the Jacksonville Library Children’s after school program and Children’s Library and Learning center.

We were the Whoville Christmas carolers for the GrinchFest along with channel 11’s Craig O’Neille, who is the Grinch master story-teller, held every year at the Children’s Library in Little Rock.

We also read our Christmas stories at the capital, several schools and libraries. Here is my sister Cindy Reyes who translates all my storybooks into Spanish.

These pictures are from the times I have traveled to Santa’s North Pole Adventureland in Jonesboro to sing and read for Kathy Johnson and her sisters for their magical store. I wrote a new story just for their Princess specials called “Santa’s North Pole Princess” the book is in their gift shop. https://www.facebook.com/santasnorthpolejonesboro/

We have enjoyed sharing our story over the past 4 years at schools, libraries, festivals, nursing homes, annual Holiday House Santa event and the annual Christmas tree lighting at the Arkansas State Capital.

November 2nd week 307

The first time I read it was for a classroom at Schofield Army barracks in Hawaii. I also read at Ft. Lee when my daughter was stationed there. At home in Arkansas I travel the state and read with Cindy and Rod. Cindy and I are both teachers and love the classroom or school assembly events. Rod is a wonderful story-teller and has fun as the Singing Santa.

We will be presenting our story and music at the Clinton Children’s Library and Learning Center Saturday December 16, 2017 at the 10am family story hour. You can get a book and we will personally sign it with your child’s name in it. Please share this with your friends and thank you for supporting local artist. It helps us continue our work.

Fall 2017

This year 2017, my canvas paintings and stationary cards for Arkansas cotton was selected to be displayed in the Plantation Agricultural State Museum in Scott, Arkansas.

These are are some of the artwork that is displayed. My father’s first job as a young boy was picking cotton. This state attraction is located south of Little Rock, Arkansas at 4815 AR-161 in Scott.

Rod and I also sang there for the tractor expo, and sold some books, paintings and music.

July recording 006

Then it was time for story-telling and “The Happy Pumpkin” storybook, which I revised this year into a BIG BOOK and added some more art.

I have a great deal of fun reading this story and singing through harvest time, Halloween and into Thanksgiving about a Pilgrim named Jack who sails to the new world to plant a pumpkin seed with a big idea about sharing his pumpkin seeds. A tribute to the American farmer. Oh my, Jack must water through the intense heat and watch over that little sprout through wind and weather till it finally grows to be a huge happy pumpkin. Thank you American farmers for all you do. Jack, like you, had a desire to feed a nation. Then, in his sharing, he receives what he hoped for most, someone to share his life with. Oh the simple pleasures of life- FAMILY! A wonderful book about hard work, sharing and faith. Book also has some healthy pumpkin treats, and see the seeds come out and a jack-o-lantern with a candle made into this happy pumpkin. Celebrate Thanksgiving by reading this book to your family year after year.
